Getting Underground PDF Print E-mail
EGI Members get underground regularly and throughout the southwest, and we'd love for you to come along. We are very safety and conservation oriented, and we also split our caving expeditions between work and fun trips.

Work trips include doing restoration projects--removing trash and grafitti from in and around cave sites and repairing speleothems broken by vandals, for example--as well as undertaking cave surveys, cave biota research, and so on.

Fun trips are, well, just that! These are good not only to explore new and familiar caves, but also get practice using newly acquired caving skills and equipment.

EGI also manages Onyx Cave, which means that Escabrosa Grotto has been officially charged with the upkeep and access control to this gated cave in southern Arizona. Onyx Cave is a complex and beautiful cave, but requires considerable caving experience and a guide to explore safely. If you are interested in gaining access to Onyx Cave, please complete this form and submit it to Andrew Moreland, the EGI Conservation Chair ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Please note that completion and submission of the Onyx Access form does not ensure that your request will be granted. The conservation of the Cave and the safety of all those who enter it are among EGI's top priorities and EGI reserves the right to refuse access to Onyx Cave for reasons related to these priorities.
